Our review Guide of 7 of the very best hand mixers on the market in 2017

There is a wide range of hand mixers on the market that come with different sets of useful functions and quality. This guide will  help you figure out what is the best hand mixer to match your needs in the kitchen.

We have reviewed a range of mixers from the very cheap to the very expensive to give you a better idea of what each comes with and what each one can do.

What is a hand mixer?

The best place to start really is to make sure that you are reading about the actual product that you want.

A hand mixer is an electronically operated mixing device that with the help of detachable mixers, beaters and even bread hooks allows you to do much of the same things as a standing mixer can but with more flexibility and obviously greater portability.

While there are some that run on batteries and even others that are operated manually we are going to be focusing on the electronic hand mixers as this guide.

For those who love baking and already have one they will tell you that they quickly become and indispensable tool in the kitchen

What are the benefits of using a hand mixer?

Greater flexibility

One of the major benefits of using of using a hand mixer is that it gives you greater flexibility while you are baking. With a standing unit everything has to be done in the one spot and this can make the process longer and a lot more messy. We have a section in this guide that cover some of the accessories that will help you make baking  even more fun in the kitchen

Easily interchangeable Accessories

Mixer accessories are easily removed and interchangeable making the process of baking so much faster, they are usually Stainless steel and so are easy to wash and even be used in the dishwasher for some of the better models.

Variable speeds and versatile

You can easily control the speed of the mixer and move it around the mixing bowl so that you get perfect results every time, with a little bit of practice

Cheaper to buy

Another very attractive benefit is that they are much much cheaper than their standing counterparts and in a lot of cases would probably be more practical.

Lightweight and easy to use

For those that those that have trouble lifting heavy things this is a great solution. They are lightweight and are easy to hold. Many have been ergonomically designed so that you have a super comfortable hold on them while you are using them.

What type of hand mixer should I buy?

Like most people, you will be using the mixer to whip up eggs, make mayonnaise or something similar. There are others who will be using theirs for something a little more strenuous such as mixing bread dough. It is always a good idea, before you purchase, to be clear on what you are going to use these for.

If you buy one of the cheaper lighter use ones they will not be able to perform as well when it comes to some of the tougher jobs.

Here at Twokitcehnjunkies we really are fans of always buying the best quality that you can afford.

The stronger and more durable the hand mixer the longer it is going to last. I can remember my Mother had hers for many years and regularly used it. It was an expensive model but in the end that paid off in money saved  and in pleasure of use. You see where I am going with this?

What to consider when looking for a good hand mixer?

We have put together a few pointers that you should be considering when buying a hand mixer:

  • A comfortable grip – I cant really overstate this enough, it is simple, you need to have this or else you are never going to like using the machine no matter how many little gadgets that it comes with.
  • Well made, sturdy parts – This is tied into what you are going to be using the hand mixer for. You can never really go too sturdy if you know what I mean? There is nothing worse than flimsy parts that really are not up for the job and bend or break leaving you annoyed and unfinished.
  • Variable speed control – The more control that you have on the speed the better, when you are mixing something then you are going to need to start off slow and build up speed until you have the perfect mix.
  • The Watt rating – if you are planning on mixing up things like dough and fruit cake mix then you should make sure you get a higher wattage machine as this will be able to deal with heavier mixing.
  • Size – You will need to consider that the bigger the machine the heavier that it will be. Of course there is a trade off as the bigger the machine the more robust it is likely to be. If you are prepared to spend a little more you can get something that is smaller as well as being robust.
  • Number of accessories that come with it – If you know what you are going to be using it for then you will be able to judge what attachments you will most likely need, if you don’t then it is a good idea to make sure you have a selection so that you can cover all options.

I know that I am harping on about it but the better the machine you get the better the attachments will be and the better the chance of having a wider selection

What accessories will I need?

There are really three different attachments that you are likely to need when you are baking or cooking:

  • Standard or turbo beaters – For everyday use like egg etc
  • A whisk – Use to whip cream and make fluffy egg whites
  • Dough hooks – For mixing dough etc to make breads

Hand mixer vs stationary mixer what are the pros and cons?

While the standing mixers are generally more robust and may have more features and functionality they are a little more involved to  set up and are more complicated to use.

For most people this is something that is not left on a kitchen surface (unless you have a big kitchen) is something that will have to be stored away. Making setting up a bit of a process.

They are amazing to use and having had one in the kitchen I was very impressed. Here is the thing though, everything has to be done from one spot and there can be a lot of cleaning etc.

If you are looking for something that is quick and easy then you should look at hand mixers. With the help of technology they have developed appliances that are really multi functional and robust and can do many of the jobs that the standing mixers can do.

What sort of price range should you expect to pay?

We have put together a table here so that you can get an idea of what you can expect to be paying for your mixer and which range your budget will fall into:

  • Budget hand mixers – $15-$25
  • Mid range hand mixers – $30 – $65
  • Top end hand mixers – $70 – $120

How to use a hand mixer effectively

We have come across this video which helps to explain how you can get the best out of the hand mixer that you choose to buy.

  • To avoid making a mess use a deep narrow bowl.
  • Rest it inside a damp twisted towel in a circle or on a rubber grip.
  • Always start off at a lower speed when adding ingredients and increase slowly as it begins to mix
  • Try to go around the edge with the mixer always keeping it in motion for the best efficiency.
  • Scrape down the bowl frequently with a rubber spatula to help make sure everything get mixed.
  • To clean the beaters after mixing, lift them a little bit out of the batter but not out of the bowl and switch on,then scrape the edges with a rubber spatula.

Conclusion – So which is the best hand mixer for you?

There is a lot of choice when it comes to hand mixers , we have only looks at a selection that we feel will be inline with the readers of the site. While there are many out there that will be happy with one of the budget mixers i think that one of the mid range ones would be a better fit for an all round average kitchen.

Of course if you have the budget buying on of the top end machines will mean that you have an appliance that has been built to last. My personal tendency would be to something in the top end as this is something that will last and looks awesome in my kitchen.

I think it is also important to have something that covers all of the points that were discussed earlier as this will be a benefit in the long run.
