Best Pizza Peel Guide - We review 5 of the best pizza peels on the market in 2016. This articles also covers the difference between wood and metal peels. What is best for you

Making the perfect pizza takes practice and the right equipment. Surprisingly, there is a lot that goes into making a simple pizza and one of the things that you will need for this is either a wooden or metal pizza peel.

In this article, we look at some of the options on the market and find the best pizza peel options for you.

There are a few things that you should be taking into consideration when you looking to buy a pizza peel. This section will try to help answer some of the questions that you might have in regards to what you buy.

What are the advantages of using a pizza peel

Having one of these in the house will just make baking and making pizza a whole lot easier. Simply put they will extend the reach you have into your oven and make things like moving the pizza around while it is cooking so much easier.

When making your pizza it is a good idea to make the pizza on the peel as this will allow you to easily get the pizza into the oven without too much handling while it is uncooked.

This is especially important if you are making a thin crust pizza.

What is better for you, wood or metal pizza peels

There are a few things to think about when you are choosing between the two. Wood is something that will require a little more maintenance as you will need to be a little careful when cleaning them.

Wood can warp if it is not dried properly but makes for a base when making the pizza( if you are making the pizza on it )

Metal ones are usually aluminum and are less maintenance. At the end of the day it will be up to what you want and feel comfortable, for me is is always wood.

Who needs a pizza peel?

This is a good investment for anyone that is serious about their pizzas, you should be making your own for pizza and at the very minimum you should also have a pizza stone that you are using to cook your pizza with.

What we like

What we don’t like

Dough has a tendency to stick to metal so you will need to be aware of that when you are making a pizza, delicate breads or pastries. You will need to make sure that the surface is always well covered with flower etc so that it does not stick.

36-Inch Aluminum Pizza Peeler with Wooden Handle and 16-Inch by 18-Inch Blade

Our Rating:

This anodised aluminum Peel comes with a wooden handle and measures 36 inches from tip to tip giving it good reach. The head or blade is 14 inches by 16 inches so there is more than enough space to make a pizza on there.

What we like

If you have a bigger oven then this has a good reach for you to get to the back of the oven without burning your hands.
A big enough head to make sure you can pick up all of the pizza and even make it on the head.

What we don’t like

This might be too big for your kitchen as the handle is quite long. If you are using a normal oven and a pizza stone then this will be too big.

It should also be noted that you will need to make sure that the peel is well covered with flour or whatever you use to stop your dough sticking as dough tends to stick to metal more than to wood.

American Metalcraft 3714 37 Inch Length x 14 Inch Width, Metal Pizza Peel

Our Rating:

This peel is 37 inches tip to tip and is made from aluminum with a 14 inch buy 14 inch head. It ia also made in America and is possibly one of the cheapest on the market.

What we like

Perfect for bigger ovens as it has more reach.
It has a big enough head to make a pizza on it.
Very cheap.
You don’t have to worry about it warping or cracking.

What we don’t like

This might be too big for your kitchen as it has a long handle, you don’t need this one if you have a normal sized oven and a pizza stone.

One other thing for me and this is just a personal thing is that this is a cheap item and so the construction and finish is not as good as the others on the market.

You will always need to make sure that there is a lot of flour or whatever it is you use to help the dough to not stick as uncooked dough tends to stick more to metal then to wood.

Some final thoughts

While ultimately the choice between metal and wood comes down to you there are a few things that should be taken into consideration. Wood has been the traditional choice for pizza peels and this is so for good reasons.

These are all very reasonably priced and are really should be an easy choice for for you to make. Our first choice is not the best seller but rather the wooden peel as we feel that this is better in terms of looks and use.

At the end of the day the choice for this will boil down to personal preference.

We also always advocate buying the best quality one that you can for your budget as better quality is always better than better budget when you can.
