Being able to cook rice is easy.

Being able to make the perfect batch of sticky rice is a lot harder.

Traditionally in Thailand and other South-east Asian countries stick rice is normally made by steaming the rice. This is a process that is a little more complicated then making normal rice and so the result is that few people here in the Western world can be bothers to do this.

Good news!

Lucky for us we are now able to make this type of rice with less fuss using a rice cooker. There are a lot of different types of rice cookers out there and this article is not about them so much , Here are a few rice cooker models that can help you with this

What type of rice should you use to cook sticky rice?

Generally speaking the shorter grain rice tend to be a lot more “sticky” then their long grained cousins , so in theory you could get your hands an any short grained rice and this would work, even sushi rice is considered a sticky rice as it is a short grained rice. The rice that you are looking for is called glutinous rice, because of its sticky nature. If you are looking for the real deal then you might have to find a specialist shop in your areas that does Thai rice

Sticky rice water ratio

For every two cups of rice, there should be about 2. 25 cups of water.

Nevertheless

This is going to vary according to the machine that you might have. Make sure that whatever the instruction is, your rice is covered with water, there should be about a cm high more water on the rice. If there is a little leftover after the rice is cooked then just let it sit for a while so that the rice can absorb some of the water up.

You may need a little trial and error in this so be patient, after a few meals you will get it right and then it will be worth it.

Chinese sticky rice recipe rice cooker

Here are a few Chinese recipes for cooking rice in a rice cooker, both require a little preparation time but are well worth the effort, The first one might be the better one to start with as it is a bit easier

This one involves marinating the rice overnight or for at least a few hours

This is a Chinese sticky rice dish using shiitake mushrooms and Chinese sausage as part of the ingredients.

Easy sticky rice recipe – just to cook basic rice in your rice cooker.

This recipe will serve 4 people

You will need 2 cups of Thai sweet (sticky rice) rice

Between 2 and 2.5 cups of water

.5 teaspoon of salt

Add all of this into the rice cooker and leave it to soak for about 30 mins

Turn on the rice cooker and leave it to cook until it turns off ( if it has an automatic timer )

If your Rice cooker does not have an automatic timer, then just time it to cook for between 15 – 20 mins.

You should leave to sit for about 5 mins or so and then it is ready to eat. If you leave it longer it will be stickier. You might have to play around with the amount of water a little to get this one right for you.
